I have been using Windows pretty much my whole life and never knew.....

Post by Calavera »

I downloaded a playlist of songs from Youtube and the program I used put a string of numbers at the beginning of each file. So I wanted to go through and delete them which isn't a big deal just right clicking the file and clicking rename is kind of annoying. So I think hmm I wonder if there is a shortcut key to rename files? I quick google search shows me that yes there is!

When the file is highlight simply press F2 to rename the file. I never knew about this until literally about 10 minutes ago. And that isn't all! When you are renaming a bunch of files in the same folder after you rename the file press TAB instead of ENTER and it will move to the next file so you don't even have to press F2 for each file! This simple shortcut could have saved me so much time over the years when I had to rename many files at once.

So what about you guys? Did you know about the F2 rename file shortcut key? And if you knew about it did you know about pressing TAB to jump to the next file?

I pretty much always use F2 if I'm typing because I can't be arsed grabbing the mouse then type with both hands again. :olol:

I knew about F2, I didn't know I could tab it, that would have been great to know before I got too lazy to rename files.

These days files are just whatever random bullshit they come to me in... Or if I'm in charge of naming them usually a 1 or a few random letters is an ample file name.
I have about 47 "1(47)"s in my newest temp folder alone and more in older temp folders.

These days I've forgotten more keyboard shortcuts than I know, and the ones I do remember I don't often remember to use.. like control shift escape.. if I remembered to use that instead of control alt delete I would have saved countless hours having to spend 1 extra second to manually select task manager.

The most useful shortcut in my life these past 8 years has been control shift v (paste but keep source formatting) of course it didn't work in office, but it worked in any good browser and certain ERP systems to make listing things easy and not end up with stupid characters and bullshit in tickets.
