When I hear a Gary Numan song that isn't cars I think to myself, why isn't this song cars!!!
Much like when I hear video killed the radio star I think to myself, why isn't this any of the buggles other songs that no one likes, I wish they had more albums.
but THEN I hear a cover of a Gary Numan song, and it is so fucking shit, I find a new appreciation of Gary Numan songs that AREN'T cars.

I like it. They made it sound like a T Rex song. It's better than the Marilyn Manson cover.

It does sound like T Rex production wise. How popular were they in the US?. Prince and the NPGs "Cream" sounds very much like "Get it On (Bang a gong)". But I've never heard Prince say Marc Bolan was a musical influence. "Children of the Revolution" sounds like it could have been a Prince song.

They were popular, but not like David Bowie or Led Zeppelin level popular. They had top 10 hits, but weren't playing stadiums like Zeppelin or the Stones could in 1972. And they were seen at a higher status level after Bolan died young and so many bands cited them as an influence.

OK cool, thanks. Marc Bolan started out wanting to be the UKs answer to Bob Dylan. Instead he joined a group called Johns Children, then started up the original T Rex, Tyrannosaurs Rex. T Rex is much more glam rock, Tyrannosaurs was a bit more folky/avant garde. As an analogy think Sid Barrett Pink Floyd to Dave Gilmour Floyd, in terms of musical influence, as T Rex were more Glam Rock. This article is interesting
