WWE 2K22 has reportedly been ‘completely rebuilt’ and is ‘looking fantastic’

The series skipped a release last year following the disastrous launch of WWE 2K20

WWE 2K22 is looking “fantastic” following a complete rebuild of the series’ gameplay engine, it has been claimed.

Forbes writer Brian Mazique claimed during his latest YouTube discussion stream that he had spoken to people familiar with the game’s development, who informed him that things were looking promising.

“I have actually spoken with people who have good knowledge of the game and understand what’s happening from a developmental standpoint, and what I’m told about gameplay at this point is that it is fantastic,” he said.

“That is actually the word that was used for the latest build. The people who were playing the latest build have said the gameplay is fantastic.

“Anybody who is talking about gameplay at this point is probably somewhat close to 2K, so you’ve got to take it with a grain of salt, but I have been told that the game is playing fantastic and that the gameplay engine is completely rebuilt,” Mazique continued.

He later added: “I also heard that the controls are much cleaner than they have been before. Now, what cleaner means, I don’t know, but the last thing that I heard about this […] is that this feels like a wrestling fan’s wrestling game.”

WWE 2K22 will be the first WWE 2K title since the series skipped an annual release due to the disastrous launch of WWE 2K20.

WWE 2K20 was a disappointing full debut for developer Visual Concepts, resulting in one of the lowest Metacritic scores in 2K’s history, mostly due to a huge number of technical issues at release.

Last year, in a bid to enact a “renewed focus” on quality, publisher 2K hired former Double Helix studio head Patrick Gilmore to take over WWE 2K.

“Core gameplay is one of the major investments we’re making in the next instalment, one of six pillars we are focused on disproportionately in development,” Gilmore wrote in a Reddit Q&A in summer 2000.

“We are looking at much-loved previous games like No Mercy or Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, along with top franchise instalments, and more modern wrestling and fighting games to build an all-new philosophical foundation for the game.”

2K Sports debuted the first trailer for WWE 2K22 at Wrestlemania in April, with the tagline “it hits different”. Nothing has been seen of the game since.

Yeah, in addition to the bugs the controllers sucked ass. The game was zero fun to play.

It was pretty clunky.

We'll have to wait and see if they've actually improved it though.

2K's Relationship With WWE Has Reportedly Become 'Seriously Strained'

"It just hasn’t been a fun place to be"

It's been a busy couple of days for the wrestling world and WWE's 2K series in general, with a brand-new trailer and release date of March 2022 cropping up for WWE 2K22 over the weekend, which is later than usual for the series.

We've been hearing good things about how the game is shaping up, but even so, a new report coming from SportsGamersOnline has suggested that behind the scenes, 2K and WWE have been butting heads for a while.

Following the highly disappointing WWE 2K20, the wrestling company reportedly "made [2K] know they want a better product this time around", and was also said to have "made it known, almost annoyingly so, how much [WWE 2K22] means to the future of the franchise". As a result, according to one source, there's been a lot of second guessing on the development team "because of a desperation to get things right.”

"It just hasn’t been a fun place to be.
Second guessing happens constantly because of a desperation to get things right."

It was also suggested that back in early 2020, WWE made subtle threats to potentially sign with other publishers.

The latest bit of tension reportedly cropped up because of the release date, with WWE wanting to get the game out in its usual November slot, and 2K and Visual Concepts "pushing hard" for a delay. One of the reasons is said to have been because of the vast number of superstar releases in WWE recently, which has led to an outdated roster.

Assuming the comments are true, then, there seems to be a fair bit of tension between the two parties, although a source mentioned that "one great game and fan response could turn things right around.” A developer was quoted in the report as saying they're trying to "make the wrestling game fans want", so let's hope they can succeed!

"'We are fans and gamers like everyone out there,' one developer said. 'We are doing everything we possibly can to make the wrestling game fans want.'"

Do you think 2K will be able to turn things around with WWE 2K22?

It is way worse than anyone remembers. I honestly don't know how I enjoyed playing it on N64.

War Zone's worth it for Ahmed's promos alone :olol: seriously though, Revenge is so much better in comparison. Shame you couldn't do the backstage promo bits like in the video at the start. Think they included that in a way with VPW2 when you can cut promo's if you hold down one of the c-buttons on your wrestlers entrance. If they had included a CAW mode to Revenge (wonder if the modders have looked whether one exists in the code) that would have been really neat. Another thing have more than one run in at a time and if you're a face, have Sting come down from the rafters to help you fight off the nWo.

I just know that no game captured my imagination like Wrestlemania 2000. Like as good as No Mercy was, it never awed me from jump the way WM2K did. I would spend hours on the create a wrestler mode - like I remember back in the day there were websites that would publish the 'formulas' for building your favorite Japanese and ECW guys and I must have played through the season mode twice with MIsawa and Kobashi.

Second place for me would be Smackdown 3, mostly because I made Mike Awesome/The Gladiator from scratch and spent gobs of time powerbombing HHH to death.
