:whoa: I'm genuinely shocked that Activision would come out swinging like this.

Don't worry guys, they're starting things off at 93 to 136 GB! But who knows whether the storage requirement will balloon after the third or fourth DLC pack comes out.

Didn't the last one start off at about 150GB? It's now well over 200GB.

Playing it now. It's funny that Siouxsie Sioux is one of the people they show in the intro to represent Western excess versus Communism.

The graphics are pretty good. It let me play after installing 80gb.

There's a rumour 2023’s Call Of Duty could be a paid expansion for Modern Warfare 2

Extra campaign to play, but no new game

Call Of Duty fans are getting worked up about whether there’ll be a new game in the military shooter series next year, as a yearly instalment has been tradition since 2005. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has waded in to allege that, while there will be some fresh COD in the offing, it’ll be in the form of something like a paid expansion for the upcoming Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 instead of a full game. A Modern Warfare 2.5, if you will.

The claim emerged part of a Twitter debate speculating whether a new Call Of Duty game would be released in 2023, following up a report from February suggesting the series would skip its annual instalment for the first time in nearly twenty years. Call Of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope, who’s been rather prolific with the rumouring lately, also alleged in a tweet over the weekend that Modern Warfare 2 would be getting campaign DLC in “late 2023”. Schreier’s claim would back that up, although neither specifies where it came from.

So there may well be more COD in 2023 without there being a distinctly new COD. Next year is the series’ 20th anniversary, so you might expect publishers Activision Blizzard to go large with it reaching that milestone. Additional campaign DLC for Modern Warfare 2, along with a rumoured greatest hits map pack, doesn’t seem like that, but nothing has been confirmed yet. All we know so far is that Activision’s Q2 earnings report this year said the company was planning “new premium content” for Call Of Duty. That could mean a new game, an expansion, or something else.

We’re fast approaching CODmas, so there’s a lot of talk about the future of the series and what’s lined up for Modern Warfare 2 after its launch this month. Other rumours doing the rounds include a trio of world-famous soccer players joining Modern Warfare 2 as operators later in the year, and the aforementioned greatest hits map pack. Ed and Hayden pooled their years of collective Call Of Duty experience to put together a list of the best COD maps they’d like to see in a pack like that, if it ever arrives.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 infiltrates Steam and Battle.net on October 28th. You can pick it up for £60/$70/€70.

Modern Warfare 2’s physical disc allegedly contains just 70MB of data

Those buying the boxed version will need to download nearly 100GB of data

Physical copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 allegedly include just 72MB of data on-disc.

That’s according to Does It Play, a social media account which tests physical games to see if they can be played offline on consoles.

According to the account, Modern Warfare 2’s disc comes with hardly any data. Assuming it’s stored on a standard PS5 UHD (100GB), less than 1% of storage is being used by the game.

At the time of publishing, the download size for the Activision shooter is around 100GB – and that’s before the release of Warzone 2 next month – so users purchasing a physical copy will still need to download virtually the entire game, and still require the disc to play it.

VGC has asked Activision for comment on this story.

If true, shunning disc storage raises issues of not just download caps, but preservation, and the environmental impact of printing what are virtually empty discs in plastic boxes.

Many social media users have criticised the alleged move. Content creator Lance McDonald wrote: “Stop pretending this is normal. It’s not normal and should never become normal. Tethering a physical disk to a digital service that forces you into firmware updates, online ecosystems and DRM updates just to play a single player game is not a standard now and should never be”.

Another Twitter user added: “This is an utter waste of resources. Either load the disc and make the D1 patch the correct size, or make it a digital download. These discs will be useless if and when Activision decide to discontinue support for the game”.

As consumers increasingly shift towards digital downloads, the issue of preservation in the games industry is becoming increasingly debated.

Without offline physical media, many games risk disappearing entirely in the future, should crucial services such as online platforms disappear.

Journalist Brittany Vincent argued in a VGC column that the games industry needs to increase its efforts for preserving video games, before more titles are lost to time.
