I saw the last half of the Last Days of Michael Jackson ABC documentary last night and it wasn't good at all. It was just a bunch of clips from the 20/20 episodes they've done about him over the past 30+ years put together with new interviews from entertainment journalists (and the only two I'd even heard of were Tourè and Chris Connelly.) It was just standard "he was the biggest star in the world and then his life had a bunch of problems from being too famous and isolated, taking drugs and allegations of molestation" stuff.

Yea some of those specials are terrible. One of the better ones they did was the one by David Gest. I really like the Journey to Off the Wall and the Bad 25 by Spike Lee too. There's a real old one called The Legend Continues by Showtime that's real good too, think it came out in like 1988 on home video. That and Making of Thriller need an official DVD remastered release.

It's really thanks to CBS who threatened to pull all their videos off MTV if they didn't air MJs music videos. Prince kicked the door open too for black artists too. MTV did this back in 1984

David Bowie called out MTV on the lack of black artists, video in this article

https://www.washingtonpost.com/gdpr-con ... 8fbd00c121

Another thing, up to the 1960s black artists often didn't put their pictures on album covers. Even some Motown covers omit the artists photos. Although they successfully crossed over to become mainstream and more accepted. Having The Beatles and Dusty Springfield be pro-Motown helped their popularity in the U.K. Dusty got Motown a TV special which when you think MTV in the early 80s wasn't playing black music videos so what Dusty did is groundbreaking in hindsight. I believe Berry tried to sign her to Motown too. They did have Chris Clark, R Dean Taylor, Kiki Dee, Rare Earth and later Teena Marie.

Some episodes missing unfortunately. Seem to be in very good quality but don't believe they have been broadcast since their first airing in the 1970s

Just found episode 2

Yea the BCR didn't really fit in with the other bands on the show but maybe they were pals with Marc.

I doubt that. Their manager was very strict on making them as squeaky clean as possible. They couldn't even be seen at a pub, although they'd pay their road crew to go sneak in liquor to their hotel rooms. So he wouldn't let them associate with someone who people assumed was doing drugs. It was probably a network choice for ratings.

I watched a BBC doc on them a few years back and yea they wanted the squeaky clean image. But usually bands were up to no good & boy bands usually rebel too. Robbie Williams is a great example. I don't know if it was a network decision because they'd just have said "Marc, we want X, Y & Z on the show (singers/bands who were in the top 10)" but you had like folks on there who weren't very mainstream at the time. Punk acts were cool with Marc Bolan & T Rex because it sort of evolved from glam rock

Making MJs Thriller, I'm guessing this is sourced from the VHS, although it was released on Laserdisc.

Blocked by Sony in the UK because of music copyright (they own his RCA recordings) but should be viewable in other countries. This was on the Sky Arts channel on TV recently and its a good doc.

Sounds good, Prince deserves a really indepth doc. Hopefully Andre Cymone, Dez, Morris, Jerome, Jesse, Jimmy & Terry, Wendy & Lisa, Sheila E, Alan Leeds, Cat, Susan Rogers, Mayte et al, i.e. Folks who actually were his friends & associates who worked closely with him instead of random z list celebs pop up who say they are a fans of his. I also guess it'll be mostly 80s related which is fine but I think the earlier pre Purple Rain era is of more interest personally. Since not much of that is documented and I'd like to hear Andre, Morris, Dez et al talk about that in more detail like him starting out in the business, how he created The Time, the side project The Rebels he was working on etc.
