Another pool turned green

Rio (CNN)There's something in the water at the Rio Olympics: Yet another pool has turned deep, bright green.

This time, it's the water polo pool.

On Tuesday, when the diving pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre mysteriously changed colors, Olympic organizers and FINA -- swimming's international governing body -- offered competing explanations why.

On Wednesday, the water polo pool at the center also went green.

An inspector takes a sample from the water polo pool which turned green in color.

Swimming pools, in case anyone is unclear, are supposed to be a shade of azure.

A 2nd Olympic pool in Rio turns green 01:12

Story highlights

Algae to blame for green hue of Olympic poolOr is it alkalinity?

Rio (CNN)There's something in the water at the Rio Olympics: Yet another pool has turned deep, bright green.

This time, it's the water polo pool.

On Tuesday, when the diving pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre mysteriously changed colors, Olympic organizers and FINA -- swimming's international governing body -- offered competing explanations why.

The water of the diving pool at right appears a murky green as the water polo pool at left appears a greener colour than the previous day.

On Wednesday, the water polo pool at the center also went green.

An inspector takes a sample from the water polo pool which turned green in color.

Swimming pools, in case anyone is unclear, are supposed to be a shade of azure.

So, what is going on? There are many explanations.

A change in alkalinity:

Mario Andrada, the communication director for the Rio 2016 local organizing committee, says a sudden change in alkalinity is the culprit.

"We expect the color to be back to blue soon," Andrada said, adding there is "absolutely no risk to the athletes or anybody."

An algae bloom:

Nope, the green tone seen was due to a proliferation of algae, the organizing body said. The algae bloomed because of heat and lack of wind, it said.

Poor organization:

Nope, says, FINA, the blames lies with the organizers. FINA claims water tanks "ran out some of the chemicals used in the water treatment process." It made no mention of wind or heat.

Commenters joked that it was nice of Shrek to loan his swamp to the Olympics, while others shared pictures of Kermit the frog and swamp monsters.

Aussies complain of itchy eyes caused by 'green' polo pool

Australia’s water polo players have reportedly complained of stinging eyes after their Olympic competition pool became the second in Rio's aquatic centre to turn green.

The water polo pool, which had been clear the day before, turned a greenish hue ahead of Australia’s match against Japan today.

It follows a similar discolouration in the diving pool yesterday, which sent social media abuzz with the hashtag #poolgate and joking suggestions someone had peed in the water.

In a statement to the media today, Rio 2016 Local Organizing Committee confirmed the water colour was the result of heat and lack of wind triggering a rapid growth of algae.

The committee said the water had been tested and posed no risk to athletes, however some Australian water polo players complained of irritation to their eyes.

"I don't know what's happened. I think they bumped up the chlorine or something because my eyes are stinging," Australian centre back Richie Campbell told Fairfax Media.

"It hurts at the end of the game and we'll probably get teary eyes for the next couple of hours but that's alright. I felt it more towards the end. It wasn't too bad in the water but now it's really starting to sting.

Cracking goal gives rise to new superstar

The world of Spanish football has been screaming the name Marco Asensio for a while now.  And it will only get louder after this

"I didn't really notice straight away but you could tell on the TV when we were watching inside. But that's alright, we've probably played in worse pools."

British diver Tonia Couch, who competed in the green pool yesterday for the women's synchronised 10m platform final, told the BBC she had "never dived in anything like it".

While Rio officials are blaming algae, blue-green algae expert Dr Ben Long from ANU said it was "highly unlikely" the change was due to toxic cyanobacteria based on the short timeframe, lack of algal scum and equal spread of colour "from top to bottom".

"Algae or blue-green algae require a large amount of light input, warm water and a lot of nutrients in order to grow," he told AAP.

"It seems unlikely that there would be a massive growth like that overnight. If it's algae, a bloom will form in the upper layers and you tend not to get it evenly mixed.

"That being said, I don't know what the quality of the water was like 24 hours ago and I don't know how they're supplying water to the pool."

Dr Long said the green colour could instead be due to a chemical imbalance in metal concentrations or pH.

"It could be a numerous amount of other things that aren't a problem for the athletes," he said.

Lindsay McGrath, chief executive of the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Australia, echoed Dr Long's view.

"It doesn't look from a visual perspective to be algae because you can see through the water and algae clouds the water," he said.

"I'm sure it's disappointing for the organisers, however we have no doubt they would be doing everything possible to keep it safe."

‘The whole building smells like a fart’: Olympic diving pool closed to deal with green water again

The Olympic diving pool was closed on Friday in a bid to finally turn the water back to blue, though the reasoning as to why this keeps happening is as murky as those green depths.

“Chemistry is not an exact science, something you can easily see,” said Rio 2016 communications chief Mario Andrada.

The pool was closed “because we need to clean the water faster and easier,” Andrade said. “The rain doesn’t help, but we needed to keep the water still for a longer period.”

The news came in response to a tweet from British diver Tom Daley, who was the one who initially alerted people to the pool’s mysterious colour transformation on Tuesday.

“Diving pool is closed this morning,” he tweeted. “Hopefully that means we haven’t been diving in anything too bad the last couple of days!”

Australian reporter Tom Steinfort said that the conditions were less than pleasant for the divers, and quoted a German diver as saying “the whole building smells like a fart”— which doesn’t sound too pleasant.

“We reiterate what we’ve been saying all along —  the water doesn’t pose any threat to the health of athletes,” Andrade said.

The preliminary for women’s three-metre springboard is scheduled to take place Friday afternoon, and it’s unclear when the pool will re-open.

There have been several explanations for the green water in the past few days, from an algae bloom, the alkalinity, a lack of the needed treatment chemicals, and even some saying the dye colouring the plastic of the diving boards had leached into the water.

Efforts on Thursday to blast the water polo pool with massive amounts of chlorine have caused blowback from the athletes who say it practically blinds them by the end of the game. Andrade said at the news conference Friday the amount of chlorine in the pool was reduced after some athletes complained about itchy eyes.

The water has been retested and everything is within the normal parameters.

Ryan Lochte, 3 other swimmers robbed at gunpoint

(RNN) - Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in Rio on Saturday, the U.S. Olympic Committee confirmed to the Associated Press.

The four swimmers were leaving the French team's hospitality house, and got into a taxi to return to the athlete's village.

Individuals posing as police stopped the taxi and demanded the swimmers money and other personal effects.

CNN reported the other three swimmers were Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen - all Americans.

Lochte is cooperating with the police.

All four athletes won a gold medal in Rio de Janeiro

Lochte, Bentz and Conger won gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, and Feigen took gold in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Lochte was expected to challenge gold medalist Michael Phelps in the 200-meter individual medley, but failed to medal.

In Winter Olympics News........

The female drummer in Shaun White's rock band is doubling down in her lawsuit against the X Games star -- claiming he sexually harassed her for years ... and she has the text messages to prove it.

We broke the story ... White is being sued by Lena Zawaideh -- who formed the band Bad Things with White back in 2008. She was fired shortly after the end of their 2014 tour. She claims she hasn't been paid for some of her work.
In new court docs obtained by TMZ Sports, Zawaideh claims she was subjected to the "darker, misogynistic personality" of White during her 7 years in the band.

Among the allegations, Zawaideh claims White sent her sexually explicit and graphic images of "engorged and erect penises" and forced her to watch sexually disturbing videos "including videos sexualizing human fecal matter."

One of the videos Zawaideh claims she was forced to watch was a couple killing a bear and then having sex on top of it.
She also claims White forced her to watch "Church of Fudge" -- a hardcore porn "involving a priest, a nun and fecal matter."
At one point, Zawaideh claims White stuck his hands down his pants, approached Zawaideh, and then "stuck his hands in her face trying to make her smell them."

She also claims he tried to kiss her on the mouth at a Halloween party in 2010 -- but she shut him down.
In her suit, filed by attorney Lawrance Bohm, Zawaideh claims White ran the band like a tyrant -- ordering her to cut her hair and wear sexually provocative outfits, despite her protests.

Zawaideh claims White would scold her when she wore more conservative outfits such as fleece sweaters.

Zawaideh issued a statement saying, "I am pursuing this case because women should not have to tolerate harassment at work. Shaun White should not be allowed to do whatever he wants just because he is famous. Although I am embarrassed to have been treated this way, I cannot sit by and watch him do this to other women."

Zawaideh is suing for non-payment of her contract plus other damages for the alleged sexual harassment.
We reached out to Shaun's camp -- so far, no word back.

The optimal time for retirement is while you're at the top of your game. Bolt was well spoken in declaring his supremacy on the track. Incidentally, it is just me, or does Bolt appear in the above image as though to be possessive of the Olympic Torch?

CHICAGO (Aug. 24, 2016) – U.S. Soccer has suspended goalkeeper Hope Solo from the U.S. Women’s National Team for six months for conduct that is counter to the organization’s principles.

The suspension for Solo, who was previously suspended for 30 days early in 2015 for her conduct, is effective immediately.

“The comments by Hope Solo after the match against Sweden during the 2016 Olympics were unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect. We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions.

“Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action.”

As a result of the suspension, Solo would not be eligible for selection to the U.S. Women’s National Team until February of 2017.
I'm the last guy in the world to ever say this: but I think this is kind of sexist. Nobody expects male athletes to be nice people 24/7. Hell, we kind of expect them to be assholes. So who cares if she took a loss poorly. So does Tom Brady and nobody wants him suspended for it. And he bitched out Gronk for not playing well enough with a broken arm in the Super Bowl that time.

And having lived in Maryland, I know Phelps is not a saint. He's notorious there for getting shitfaced and acting like an asshole at bars and nightclubs. But nobody wants him suspended.
