The Terrorism News Thread

Post by Dr. Zoidberg »

There have been a lot of terrorist attacks lately, so here's a shitty thread for them.

At least 53 dead after explosion in Lahore's Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park (Pakistan)

LAHORE: An explosion occurred in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park of Iqbal Town on Sunday evening, killing at least 53 people and injuring over a 100, police said.

Iqbal Town Superintendent of Police Dr Muhammad Iqbal said the explosion was a suicide attack and took place in a children's park, where a large number of families, especially women and children, were present on a Sunday evening. The area is a renowned residential area of Lahore.

‘Dead bodies everywhere’

Eye witnesses said there were pools of blood and scattered body parts in the park.

An eyewitness, talking to DawnNews, said dead bodies and injured were on the ground everywhere.

"We took the injured to hospitals on rickshaws and taxis."

He said the crowd was "unusually large" because of Easter.

"The roads were also jammed and queues of vehicles could be seen till Moon Market."

Many eyewitnesses said there was no security present in and around the park. A man, talking to DawnNews, said:

"The park is huge and has many entrance gates. There was almost negligible security personnel present there."

A Rescue 1122 spokesman confirmed that an emergency call was received at around 6:44pm and that over 20 ambulances reached the site.

An emergency has been declared at all government hospitals in the city, and a heavy contingent of police has cordoned off the area.

Isis supporters threaten London with terror attacks in new propaganda video

Analysts have said the group's propaganda strategy is in 'crisis' and alienating potential recruits

Isis supporters have released a new video calling for terror attacks in London, Berlin and Rome against a backdrop that suggests the terror group's propaganda machine may be in crisis.

The video, called “Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands”, calls on extremists to “kill (infidels) wherever you find them”.

After showing footage of the attacks in Paris and Brussels, as well as 9/11, the narrator calls the previous atrocities a “cautionary message” to nations fighting the so-called Islamic State.

“If it was Paris yesterday, and today in Brussels, Allah knows where it will be tomorrow,” a narrator says in English. “Maybe it will be in London or Berlin or Rome.”

The propaganda film was released on Monday by a group called Al Wa’ad Media Production, which activists in Raqqa say support Isis.

Claiming responsibility for the bombings that killed more than 30 people in Brussels last month, militants threaten to bring more “dark days” to Europe.

Gilles Kepel, a French expert on jihadism, told The Independent that Isis’ propaganda message had become “muddled”.

“Its communication is in crisis,” he said. “These indiscriminate attacks have fallen on multi-cultural cities with exactly the kind of Muslim populations they are trying to recruit.

“But these actions have not brought Muslims together [behind Isis]. Far from it.”

However, terrorism experts say the latest atrocity in Brussels shows the group lashing out as it suffers military defeats in its territories and has top commanders picked off by air strikes.

A note attributed to one of the Brussels bombers, Brahim el-Bakraoui, showed panic and disorganisation as he wrote of being “in a rush” and feeling “hunted” by security forces.

The assault came days after the capture of surviving Paris attacker Salah Abdeslam in a huge intelligence coup for European authorities.

Istanbul Ataturk airport attack: 36 dead and more than 140 hurt

A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk international airport has killed 36 people and injured more than 140 others, officials say.

Three attackers began shooting outside and inside the terminal late on Tuesday and blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs suggested the so-called Islamic State was behind the attack.

Recent bombings have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists.

Tuesday's attack looked like a major co-ordinated assault, says the BBC's Mark Lowen.

Ataturk airport has long been seen as a vulnerable target, our Turkey correspondent adds, reporting from a plane stuck on the tarmac in Istanbul.

There are X-ray scanners at the entrance to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited.

Pictures from the airport terminal showed bodies covered in sheets, with glass and abandoned luggage littering the building.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

"The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world," he said.

The US called the attack "heinous", saying America remained "steadfast in our support for Turkey".

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere called the attacks "cowardly and brutal".
'Dressed in black'

Speaking several hours after Tuesday's attack, Mr Yildirim said at least 36 people were killed and many wounded, some seriously, with foreigners likely to be among the victims.

He said the attackers had arrived at the airport in a taxi.

Footage on social media shows one of the attackers running in the departure hall as people around him flee. He is shot by police and remains on the ground for about 20 seconds before blowing himself up. All three attackers were killed.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag put the number of injured at 147.

Taxis were used to rush casualties to hospital after the attack. Desperate relatives of those missing later gathered outside a local hospital where many victims were taken. Some expressed anger about the lack of information.

Flights in and out of the airport were suspended after the attack. The US Federal Aviation Administration initially grounded all services between the US and Istanbul but the stoppage was later lifted.

Flights have now resumed at the airport, but information boards showed about one-third had been cancelled, with many delays.

Paul Roos, who was due to fly home to South Africa, told Reuters he saw one of the attackers.

"He was wearing all black. His face was not masked. We ducked behind a counter but I stood up and watched him. Two explosions went off shortly after one another. By that time he had stopped shooting.

"He turned around and started coming towards us. He was holding his gun inside his jacket. He looked around anxiously to see if anyone was going to stop him and then went down the escalator. We heard some more gunfire and then another explosion, and then it was over."

Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium whose capital city was targeted by bombers in March, tweeted from the EU summit in Brussels: "Our thoughts are with the victims of the attacks at Istanbul's airport. We condemn these atrocious acts of violence."

#PrayforTurkey began trending on Twitter after the attack.

In December, a blast on the tarmac at a different Istanbul airport, Sabiha Gokcen, killed a cleaner. That attack was claimed by a Kurdish group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK).

Major recent attacks

2016

7 June, Istanbul: Car bomb kills seven police officers and four civilians. Claimed by Kurdish militant group TAK

19 March, Istanbul: Suicide bomb kills four people in shopping street. IS blamed.

13 March, Ankara: Car bomb kills 34. Claimed by TAK.

17 February, Ankara: 29 killed in attack on military buses. Claimed by TAK

12 January, Istanbul: 11 Germans killed by Syrian bomber in tourist area

2015

23 December, Istanbul: Bomb kills cleaner at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport. Claimed by TAK

10 October, Ankara: More than 100 killed at peace rally outside railway station. Blamed on IS

20 July, Suruc, near Syrian border: 34 people killed in bombing in Kurdish town. IS blamed

More than 61 million passengers travelled through Ataturk airport in 2015.

However, security concerns and a Russian boycott over last year's downing of a Russian military jet on the Turkey-Syria border have hit the Turkish tourist sector this year.

A US state department travel warning for Turkey, originally published in March and updated on Monday, urges US citizens to "exercise heightened vigilance and caution when visiting public access areas, especially those heavily frequented by tourists."

Nearly 120 killed in overnight Baghdad bombings claimed by Islamic State

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nearly 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in two bombings overnight in Baghdad, most of them in a busy shopping area as residents celebrated Ramadan, police and medical sources said on Sunday.

The attack on the shopping area of Karrada is the deadliest since U.S.-backed Iraqi forces last month scored a major victory when it dislodged Islamic State from their stronghold of Falluja, an hour's drive west of the capital. It is also the deadliest so far this year.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had ordered the offensive after a series of deadly bombings in Baghdad, saying Falluja served as a launchpad for such attacks on the capital. However, bombings have continued.

A convoy carrying Abadi who had come to tour the site of the bombings was pelted with stones and bottles by residents, angry at what they felt were false promises of better security.

A refrigerator truck packed with explosives blew up in the central district of Karrada, killing 115 people and injuring at least 200. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated online by supporters of the ultra-hard line Sunni group. It said the blast was a suicide bombing.

Karrada was busy at the time as Iraqis eat out and shop late during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends next week with the Eid al-Fitr festival.

Videos posted on social media showed people running after the SUV convoy of Abadi as he departed Karrada after touring the scene, throwing pavement stones, bottles of water, empty buckets and slippers, venting their anger at the inability of the security forces to protect the area.

Another video posted on social media showed a large blaze in the main street of Karrada, a largely Shi'ite district with a small Christian community and a few Sunni mosques.

Reuters TV footage taken in the morning showed at least four buildings severely damaged or partly collapsed, including a shopping mall believed to be the target, and gutted cars scattered all around.

The toll climbed during the day as rescuers pulled out more bodies from under the rubble and people succumbed from their injuries.

Comments posted on social media accused security forces of continuing to use fake bomb detectors at checkpoints filtering traffic in Baghdad, five years after the scandal broke out about a device commonly known as the 'magic wand'.

A police officer in Baghdad confirmed these hand-held ADE 651 detectors were still in use. They were sold to Iraq and other nations by a British businessman who was jailed for 10 years in 2013 in the United Kingdom for endangering lives for profit.

AL SHAAB ATTACK

In a second attack, a roadside explosive device also blew up around midnight in a market in al-Shaab, a Shi'ite district in the north of the capital, killing at least two people, police and medical sources said.

Iraqi forces on June 26 declared the defeat of IS militants in Falluja, a historic bastion of Sunni insurgency, following a month of fighting.

Now the militants were "trying to compensate for their humiliating defeat in Falluja," said Jasim al-Bahadli, a former army officer and security analyst in Baghdad.

"It was a mistake for the government to think that the source of the bombings was restricted to just one area," he said. "There are sleeper cells that operate independently from each other."

Falluja was the first Iraqi city to fall to Islamic State in January 2014. Abadi said the next target of the Iraqi forces is Mosul, the de facto capital of the militants and the largest city under their control in both Iraq and Syria.

Nice attack: Dozens killed during Bastille Day celebrations

At least 84 people have died, including children, after a lorry slammed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city of Nice.

The driver ploughed on for 2km on the Promenade des Anglais at about 23:00 local time, before being shot dead by police.

President Francois Hollande said the attack was of "an undeniable terrorist nature".

A state of emergency, in place since November's Paris attacks, has been extended by three months.

France had been on high alert since those attacks in which 130 people died and hundreds were wounded.

"France is badly hit," Mr Hollande said, adding that "we need to do everything we can to fight against" such attacks.

"All of France is under the threat of Islamic terrorism," he said, adding that several children were among the dead.

The president added that "operational reserves" would be deployed to support the army and security forces across the country, with particular focus on the borders.

About 50 people were injured, 18 of them critically, in the incident on Thursday, which was Bastille Day - France's national day.

Prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre said the lorry drove 2km (1.2 miles) through a large crowd, the AFP news agency reported.

One image on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street.

Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet denied earlier reports of hostage situations and said the driver of the lorry had been "neutralised".

He added that officials were investigating whether the driver acted alone.

No group has so far claimed responsibility, however prosecutors said the inquiry would be handled by anti-terror investigators.

Some reports spoke of shots being exchanged between police and the occupants of the lorry but these have not been confirmed.

Social media video showed people running through the streets in panic following the incident.

A journalist with the Nice Matin newspaper reported from the scene that there was "a lot of blood and without doubt many injured".

A reporter for the AFP news agency said the incident took place as the firework display was ending, adding: "We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around."

Another image on Twitter showed a white lorry stopped in the middle of the promenade with damage to its front, and four police officers observing it while taking cover behind a palm tree.

One eyewitness told BFM TV: "Everyone was calling run, run, run there's an attack run, run, run. We heard some shots. We thought they were fireworks because it's the 14th of July.

"There was great panic. We were running too because we didn't want to stick around and we went into a hotel to get to safety. "

Another witness, Roy Calley, told the BBC that there were "thousands of people on the promenade" when the incident happened.

"The police have completely taken over the city, the promenade has now been closed down. Everybody was physically pushed away from the site and told to get back in no uncertain terms by the police."

"I live 200m from the promenade and it took nearly one hour 30 minutes to get back to my flat because all the roads have been closed down."

US President Barack Obama condemned "in the strongest terms" what he said appeared to be "a horrific terrorist attack in Nice", the White House said.

The president had been briefed about the situation "and his national security team will update him, as appropriate", National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he was "shocked and saddened by the appalling events in Nice, and the terrible loss of life".

European Council President Donald Tusk condemned the attack, saying "it's a tragic paradox that the subject of this attack were people celebrating liberty, equality and fraternity".

On Friday, flags in France will be flying at half-mast, and Nice's jazz festival has been cancelled.

I read the other day that France was close to being at civil war, with either another terrorist attack or a mass sexual attack by foreigners would tip things over the edge. So this might do it.

Here's the article:

France really should do something to combat the terrorist threat as it's very, very real in their country. But targeting folks just because they are Islamic/Muslim in a civil war type scenario there's a danger that they will kill innocent folks, as from what I've ascertained it's supposedly a peaceful religion. Plus you have Muslims who stand up against daesh so It's highly unlikely that daesh affiliated persons will be publicly visible, they are likely to be on the fringes of society and hide in the shadows until they commit another horrendous act. So targeting minorities isn't the cure as like I said 99% are innocent and because of their religion and skin color they are being tard by the same brush. I really don't know how to stamp on and crush daesh, I'm hoping that the intelligence agencies of the world manage to infiltrate and bring them down and cut the head off the snake. Otherwise it'll still keep continuing and it's beyond words that in 2016 we aren't safe. I imagine somewhere down the line they'll be a World War III and if the whole world goes to war against daesh then I think they'd have no chance, but again that would stir North Korea and I imagine they'd team up with daesh because of their volatile and unstable nature of their leader. But again if they do go to war, in the fallout you'd have tons of collateral damage and innocent lives will be lost and of course there's also the threat that the sons of a daesh members will follow in their fathers footsteps to avenge their fathers so it's a highly dangerous situation and I don't think they'll ever stop and this saga will ever end until they get control and that must not ever happen at all costs, since the entire world will be plunged into chaos.

According to testimony before a French government committee, the perpetrators of the November Paris terrorist attacks engaged in “gruesome torture,” a fact that government prosecutors went to great lengths to deny.

According to a translation provided by Heat Street, the victims in the Bataclan theater were found beheaded, with their eyes gouged out, castrated, and with their genitals shoved into their mouths. Some of the female victims were reportedly “sexually tortured” and found with multiple lacerations to their genitals. The scene was bad enough that officers on the scene had to leave to vomit.

The President of the Committee read off a letter he had received from one of the victim’s father: “On the causes of the death of my son A., at the forensic institute in Paris, I was told, and what a shock it was for me at that moment, they had cut off his testicles, had put them in his mouth, and he was disemboweled.” His son was so mutilated, the father wrote, that he could only identify him from the left side of his face.

But when prosecutors were questioned on the victims’ injuries, they insisted that it was possible they were caused by gunfire and explosions. They point to the fact that no sharp knives were found on the scene, making mutilation and beheading difficult.

“Some of the bodies found at the Bataclan were extremely mutilated by the explosions and weapons, to the point that it was sometimes difficult to reconstruct the dismembered bodies. In other words, injuries described… may also have been caused by automatic weapons, by explosions or projections of nails and bolts that have resulted,” a prosecutor argued.

“Would those have put a man’s balls in in his own mouth?” asked one incredulous committee member.

“I do not have that information,” the prosecutor responded.

Powerful blasts kill at least 80 in Kabul protest

ISIL claims responsibility for blasts targeting a demonstration by members of Afghanistan's Hazara minority in Kabul.

Twin explosions targeting a large demonstration by members of Afghanistan's ethnic Hazara minority in Kabul have killed at least 80 people and wounded more than 230, officials have said.

The attack on Saturday, near one of the most heavily fortified areas of the Afghan capital, was quickly claimed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), who have previously targeted the Hazara people.

"Two fighters from Islamic State detonated explosive belts at a gathering of Shi'ites in... the city of Kabul in Afghanistan," Amaq, an ISIL-linked website, said.

Mohammad Ismail Kawoosi, a spokesman for the Afghan health ministry, warned that the death toll could rise further.

Graphic television footage from the site of the blasts showed charred bodies and dismembered limbs lying on a bloodied road in Deh Mazang circle, close to where thousands of the Hazara had been demonstrating over the route of a planned multimillion dollar power line.

Ambulances struggled to reach the scene, as authorities had overnight blocked key intersections with stacked shipping containers to control movement of the protesters.

"I was in the crowd of protesters when a loud bang occurred nearby. Many people have been killed or injured - I am in deep shock," demonstration organiser Jawad Naji told the AFP news agency.

Al Jazeera's Qais Azimy, reporting from Kabul, said it was one of the deadliest attacks in the capital in years.

"The city of Kabul is totally in a shock right now," he said.

"In the past ISIL has carried out attacks in the eastern part of the country, mainly suicide attacks, but not as far as Kabul - they were limited to Nangarhar province along the border with Pakistan," Azimy added.

"If it is true that ISIL is behind this attack it shows the growing capability of the group."

In a statement, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said he was "deeply saddened" by the carnage, adding that the casualties included security officials.

The demonstrators had gathered to demand a multi-million-dollar power line pass through their electricity-starved province of Bamiyan, one of the most deprived areas of Afghanistan with a large Hazara population.

The 500-kilovolt TUTAP power line, which would connect the Central Asian nations of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with electricity-hungry Afghanistan and Pakistan, was originally set to pass through the central province.

But the government re-routed it through the mountainous Salang pass north of Kabul, saying the shorter route would speed up the project and save millions of dollars.

Hazara leaders in the country lashed out at the president, calling the decision prejudiced against their group.

The three million-strong Hazara community has been persecuted for decades, with thousands killed in the late 1990s by al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Islamic State issues chilling new threats against Australian iconic sites after Syria death

The Islamic State has issued a vicious and detailed call to "lone wolf" followers to stab, shoot, poison and run over Australians at iconic attractions including Bondi Beach and the MCG.

The latest exhortation from the terrorist group follows the death in Syria of convicted Australian terrorist Ezzit Raad, who was jailed in connection with the 2005 plot to blow up the MCG and features as the latest jihadist poster boy in a new magazine.

Police uncover threats made by the terrorist group calling for lone wolf attacks on iconic Australian sites including MCG, SCG and Bondi beach. Courtesy ABC News 24.

In its first edition of Rumiyah published overnight, the terrorist group calls for lone wolf attacks in Australia in a manner of detail not seen before in the group's publications.

"Light the ground beneath them aflame and scorch them with terror," it states, painting the attacks as the way to avenge the death of Raad.

"Kill them on the streets of Brunswick, Broadmeadows, Bankstown, and Bondi. Kill them at the MCG, the SCG, the Opera House, and even in their backyards.

"Stab them, shoot them, poison them, and run them down with your vehicles. Kill them wherever you find them until the hollowness of their arrogance is filled with terror and they find themselves on their knees with their backs broken under the weight of regret for having waged a war against the believers, and by Allah's will, and then through your sacrifices, this Ummah will be victorious."

Many experts and government officials have warned that as IS loses territory in Iraq and Syria, it will lash out globally through attacks on western countries.

The magazine says Raad, 36, who was convicted in an operation code named Pendennis and jailed for four-and-a-half years, was killed after being hit by shrapnel in the city of Manbij, near Aleppo.

His brother Ahmad Raad was also jailed in the 2005 plot to blow up the MCG, which was organised by mastermind Abdul Nacer Benbrika.

It says he died when "a piece of shrapnel struck him and tore his chest open".

It refers to Australia as "a land cloaked in darkness and corrupted by kufr, fornication, and all forms of vice".

Raad left Australia in 2013 after being released from jail and before the government had begun a comprehensive system of cancelling passports of those they suspected of planning to join the war in Syria.

The magazine says he was released from prison "more emboldened and more steadfast upon this path".

Raad was regarded as a major recruiter, helping take to Syria Adam Dahman, who eventually blew himself in a suicide bombing at a market in Baghdad.

The magazine says he became a local leader, being appointed "amir of the Faruq Dam and the surrounding villages".

It says he joined with the IS leader Abu Bakr al-Iraqi, better known as Haji Bakr, and "became one of his closest companions".

Iraqi was a senior IS military commander and top deputy to leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed fighting moderate Syrian rebels in northern Aleppo in February 2014.

NSW Police said they had no evidence of any specific threat or danger following the magazine's publication but they continue to operate at an "increased level of awareness" and conduct regular operations around landmarks and sporting venues.

It's understood there has not been any chatter detected by counter-terrorism authorities.

A Sydney Opera House spokeswoman said they "continuously monitor and evaluate the current environment and ensure appropriate security measures are in place".

There was a terrorist attack this morning at Ohio State University. Supposedly a guy pulled the fire alarm and hacked people with a machete as they came out. One person is dead (rumored to be the attacker), one is in critical condition and 7 others are injured.
